Spence-Chapin provides you with crucial and free services as you’re working with our social workers on a plan for the future. These services include:
We offer a safe space to consider your options with free, confidential, and unbiased supportive counseling. You can speak with us however you feel most comfortable—phone, email, text, in person, or via virtual video counseling. We have several office locations, but we will also visit you anywhere in the New York City metro area (the five boroughs, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, Westchester, and New Jersey)! Our counseling and support are available 24/7 and in multiple languages.
If you choose to make an adoption plan, you’ll also receive free post adoption counseling sessions.

For those who choose to make an adoption plan, we’ll hire an adoption attorney on your behalf to represent you free of charge. If you choose to have an open adoption (find out more about adoption), your attorney will explain your options and help you craft an open adoption agreement that works for you.
Parenting a newborn can be overwhelming while you are trying to make a plan for the future. You may need additional time to think about your future. Our Interim Care Program will allow you to continue counseling to fully explore all options while your baby is cared for by a nurturing caregiver in a loving home. You’ll retain your legal rights while the baby is in care and are encouraged to visit your baby. Our services are free for you while you take the days or even a few weeks to make a decision.
The Manhattan Birthparents Support Group is an independent support group that meets at Spence-Chapin. The peer-led group meets monthly to explore their feelings and to share their stories in a safe, supportive space. The group is open to all birthparents even if their adoptions were not planned through Spence-Chapin.
If you are pregnant and making an adoption plan, Spence-Chapin can offer assistance for pregnancy-related expenses. Some pregnancy-related expenses include: prenatal and doctor visits through the delivery of the baby, travel costs, and more.
Depending on which option you choose and how far along you are in your pregnancy, it may be important to create a hospital plan to make sure that your choices are respected when giving birth. Your Spence-Chapin social worker will work with you to create the plan you want, so you can make decisions for yourself and your child during your hospital stay. Our counselors will work with the hospital social worker to ensure your rights are protected, and your wishes are supported. We are available 24/7 to support you.
Through the free counseling you receive, your counselor will have resources available to support the plan you choose for the future. Resources may include on-going counseling, referrals for housing, and more.
